The Seattle Mariners missed the playoffs for a sixth consecutive season and sprayed beer all over their clubhouse anyway. Felix Hernandez pitched into the ninth inning and J.J. Miguel Batista finished his first year with the Seattle Mariners in style. Batista limited Texas to three hits in eight innings, Jose Guillen went 4-for-4 and the Mariners beat the Rangers 5-1 Saturday night. Batista (16-11) struck out five, walked two and won his third straight decision. He retired 15 of 16 batters over one stretch and allowed only one hit after the second inning.

Mariners right-hander Jorge Campillo left the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader with the Cleveland Indians in the sixth inning after getting hit in the right arm by a line drive from Casey Blake. With the bases loaded and no outs, Blake lined Campillo’s pitch back to the mound. The ball ricocheted off Campillo’s lower forearm over to third baseman Mike Morse, who threw out Blake.

Cleveland pitcher Paul Byrd likes the idea of playing meaningful games this time of year. Of course, the Indians would prefer to win them. The Seattle Mariners beat the Indians 4-2 on Thursday night, their second straight win over Cleveland to deny the Indians sole possession of the best record in the American League.
